It’s always good to keep it simple and comfortable for any lifestyle newborn session. Neutral light colors (creams, whites, grays, pastel tones) tend to work better as they don’t take away from the natural beauty of your new baby. Pops of color can be added, sometimes this is best done by using accessories. I recommend solid colors, one print at most for the family in these sessions. Sometimes floral print adds a delicate but subtle touch. Variety is best added using textures, consider using knits or lace for this.
Moms may consider a flowy shirt, maxi dress, light sweater set, or pretty cotton gown or romper that will be both comfortable and soft while you are cuddling baby. For Dads, the same rules apply. Keep it simple and comfortable. A solid base tee or button down is perfect. Combine with jeans, khakis, or neutral slacks. For siblings, follow the same tips from above and dress them in similar ways. Most of the time something they already have in their closet is perfect. Just take a quick look for neutral or light colored and comfortable items.
Baby will look best in something simple like a solid onesie. If there is a special outfit you would like to highlight we can definitely do that too. New babies don’t tend to fit clothing really well, so its always a good idea to be sure we have at least one well fitting outfit. Swaddles and simple onesies or gowns always highlight their size and details.
Shoes and socks, bare-feet looks most natural and makes the most sense for in-home sessions. Also, prominent logos and large lettering of any kind should be avoided if possible. Any thing too bold in pattern or color.
Remember when choosing clothing that the house will be warm. Also, many newborns will have flaky skin during those first few weeks of life. Consider applying lotion the couple days before your session. Finally, It is possible that Mom and Dad’s hand will be in some of the shots.
