I often hear boy moms ask, “Are senior pictures for guys also?” YES they are! The next question is often “How do I get my son to agree to it?” Well, it may be easier thank you think.
Here are 5 points to discuss with your son about why a senior session is important.
Celebrate your Accomplishments– Even boys understand what a big deal it is to make it through High School. Regardless of where their path is taking them from here, finishing is a reason to celebrate! Senior pictures can include sports, activities, hobbies, and interests. They represent so many achievements. As a mom, this is a moment in time worth capturing!
They come in Handy– This will likely be your son’s last solo photo session for quite some time. It might be the last until they get headshots through a job, wedding photos, etc. So even though boys may not see the need for senior photos, they are likely to understand that a senior session could come in handy. This is the age when they may need a professional photo for social media, a headshot for an application or school/job, or just updated shots to share with friends/family. They often need an updated photo for a senior or awards night. Also, they make great gifts and are perfect for a simple announcement close to graduation.
You’re only a Senior Once– This is one of those milestones that you never get to do again. Its a time that you prep for, for so long, and then it goes by so quickly. They may not be into all of the little traditions surrounding senior year or they might be excited each step of the way. Either way, getting some photos to remember the moment is always worth it during these once in a lifetime events!
Dinner After– Okay, I admit these last two may be a last resort for the guys who dig in their heels. However, I know that food is the way to a lot of teenage boys’ hearts! So, it never hurts to promise a special dinner out after. And it’s a win for us Moms too, who are soaking up every last meal we get to spend with them before they head out into the world!
Make Mom Happy– I have seen many boys show up for their sessions just to make their Mom happy! I think it shows pretty great character if they will do it for you! And with all you’ll do for them this year, it’s okay to ask them to humor you on this one. As a bonus, the result is usually that they feel special just because you asked.
Over years of photographing seniors, I have learned that boys don’t hate it as much as you might think. It’s hard to believe because they tend to be less than excited about sessions at about 13-15 years old. But something happens as they grow and mature, and start to feel a little less awkward in their skin. Almost all of the boys I’ve photographed as seniors have ended up really enjoying their sessions.
Believe it or not, a lot of senior boys become a bit nostalgic themselves as they move through senior year. But there aren’t always many ways for them to channel that emotion. Senior pictures are a fun way to capture this time and make it all about them. Even the most hesitant boys usually bring a good attitude to the session and leave with a smile on their face! (partially because its over, but also because they had a little fun).
